The Provo River is one of the best known fly fishing rivers in the west. It is 20 minutes from Park City and 45 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. This Blue Ribbon River provides excellent fishing year-round. It originates in the high Uinta Mountains, and is divided into three distinct sections; the upper, the middle, and the lower. The three sections are separated by two reservoirs, the Jordanelle and Deer Creek. Because of these reservoirs the middle and lower sections of the river are classic tail-water fisheries, where the upper is more of a free stone river. These tail-water sections are managed for trophy trout. The water is almost always clear and fishable, and the fish numbers are truly impressive. There are many access points along the 25 miles of river, so if you have any limitations this is a great choice. With its close proximity to Park City this river is ideal for half or full day trips.
Here is a website tracking the daily water flows on Provo river which we find interesting.
There are several other rivers within 1 to 1.5 hours of Park City. The Weber River is close enough for half or full day trips. The other rivers we fish require a full day trip due to travel time. If you have fished the Provo River and would like to try something new, let us know.
We offer flyfishing on private ponds. They cost a little more money because we have to pay a fee to use them. Reservations must be made in advance and are subject to availability.
Brandon Bertagnole, owner / operator of Park City Outfitters has been guiding clients since 1989. He learned how to fly fish right here on the Provo River in 1973. The entire Park City Outfitters guide team is made up of local professional guides. We all have a passion for fly fishing. It’s not just our job; the river is where we spend our days off too.

  • March 8 2007: Brandon, I just wanted to let you know that we had a blast with Danno on Sunday. What a great guide! Thanks for coordinating this. I was able to use the nymphing techniques he taught me (and the flies he gave me) to have two more days of great fishing on the Provo river!
